- ➤ Food banks across Hampton Roads are using lessons from 2025 to prepare for higher demand in 2026. The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia plans special distributions in January and February while the Judeo Christian Outreach Center nears completion of its new facility—expected to open soon—to provide meals and affordable housing. - ➤ Potbelly Sandwich Shop will open its first Southeast Virginia location at Fairfield Shopping Center on Jan. 20. The drive-thru venue in Kempsville will host a grand opening on Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.—the first 50 customers in line will receive free Potbelly for a year. WTKR

- ➤ A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday at JEB Little Creek-Fort Story for a new 41,000 sqft child development center that will serve up to 300 children (infant, pre-toddler, toddler, and preschool) and five playgrounds. Construction will start in February and is expected to finish in 2028. WTKR
- ➤ Federal agencies resumed wage garnishment for defaulted student loans on Jan. 7 after pandemic relief ended — about 1,000 defaulted borrowers, including those in Hampton Roads, received 30-day notices to check their loan status and explore options like income-driven plans or forbearance. 13News Now

- ➤ Virginia Beach officials reported that their Homeless Services Division helped over 470 households avoid homelessness in 2024 — preventing eviction for 354 families and connecting 118 families to stable housing.
