Virginia Beach City Public Schools will vote on three proposals on April 8 that would change costs for after-school activities by raising coach pay 10%—with extra awards for postseason teams—and increasing ticket prices for sports and club events.
The changes are designed to cover a pay rise estimated at $300,000, ticket price hikes expected to generate about $369,000, and expanded ticket sales projected to add $50,000 before the new costs take effect in the 2025-2026 school year.
Virginia Beach leaders are considering raising the restaurant meal tax from 5.5 percent to 6 percent if approved — the change will take effect on July 1.
The increase will boost the overall dining tax to 12 percent and fund major city projects while officials host two public hearings for resident input.
Congresswoman Jen Kiggans (a Virginia Beach lawmaker) introduced a bill on Tuesday to allow tax-exempt status for donations meant to support fallen officers (Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reese) and their families.
