  • Ascent Church is planning to move from Shore Drive to the Beach Cinema Ale House space on Laskin Road and faces opposition from more than 2,500 locals who signed a petition over concerns about losing a long-time theater and potential traffic issues. City officials deferred the permit decision for 30 days and set a public hearing for April 9 to review the matter.  WTKR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Auto dealers are raising their inventories in preparation for a possible 25% tariff on imported vehicles and parts later this week. Dan Banister, who owns four local dealerships, said dealers are ordering extra cars to get ready while he expects the industry to bounce back soon.  13News Now
  • On March 28, Mr. Monopoly and Mayor Bobby Dyer hosted an event at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center to unveil MONOPOLY: Virginia Beach Edition featuring local landmarks such as First Landing State Park and Mount Trashmore Park—this game is the first licensed version to highlight Hampton Roads attractions and will be sold at local retailers and online for $44.99.  WAVY

CRIME NEWS

  • Benjamin Young, a 45 year old former Virginia Beach businessman, was sentenced today to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting his 19 year old employee on August 16 — he was convicted of forcible sodomy and object sexual penetration after a June jury trial and must register as a sex offender.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office ended its inmate grass mowing program after an audit showed the cost to supervise low-risk offenders lost money (expenses outpaced revenue by nearly 34% over three years), and Parks & Recreation signed new contracts with private vendors to handle landscaping. The office will now launch an inmate-supervised litter cleanup program and Sheriff Rocky Holcomb will share the plan today during a budget briefing.  The Virginian-Pilot
