COMMUNITY NEWS

  • FACT, Families of Autism Coming Together, has opened a new gift shop in Virginia Beach that sells art and calming products like Joy Jars crafted by neurodivergent makers including an 11 year old, and it opened just in time for Autism Acceptance Month. The shop is staffed by a HERO employee—helping those with autism gain paying jobs—and operates Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.  WAVY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Virginia Beach Fire Department crews responded today to a fire on the 3800 block of Amberley Forest Place in the Green Run section and quickly controlled flames with water by 8:21 a.m.—the fire started in a kitchen from unattended cooking, and no injuries or displacement were reported.  WAVY
  • Crews responded to a fire at Waterford Apartments on Bantry Lane in the Northwestern Bayside area that damaged eight units as residents evacuated safely—officials say the cause is under investigation.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • This week in Hampton Roads will feature a busy lineup of cultural events as comedian Katt Williams begins his 'Heaven on Earth' tour Friday at 8 p.m. at Scope arena in Norfolk—Ballet Virginia presents 'Snow White' Saturday at Sandler Center in Virginia Beach while a wine expo, a 'The Sound of Music' singalong, and other performances add to the schedule.  Daily Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Clay Dills of Dills Architects presented the Central Beach Small Area Plan Tuesday night to redevelop the area by adding about 2,700 housing units, over 500,000 square feet of commercial space and more than 10,000 parking spaces. The plan features a new parking garage on Parks Avenue that will serve as the gateway to an elevated walkway—improving connectivity along the Oceanfront.  13News Now
  • Virginia Beach City Council on Tuesday agreed to consider a voter referendum at its April 15 meeting that will let local voters decide between the current 10—1 voting system and a modified 7—3—1 model. Some council members support a change while others worry about costly public education campaigns and potential legal challenges.  13News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local naval officer was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis last December and now uses his hat business to raise funds—his superiors support his treatment and his hat business will donate all proceeds at the Walk MS event on April 6 in Virginia Beach.  WAVY

  • The 15th Annual East Coast She-Crab Soup Classic returns to Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Saturday, April 5 from noon to 2:30 p.m. The event will feature celebrity chef Tyler Florence as a judge plus filming of The Great Food Truck Race starting at 11 a.m. on Atlantic Avenue and 31st Street, and tickets are required for entry.  WAVY
