  • James Goodwyn Jr. was found guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of Cynthia Carver, a Southampton County mother abducted from her Newsoms home in February 2019—DNA evidence from beneath her fingernail linked him to the crime.  13News Now
  • A woman charged with second-degree murder after killing her father, a prominent Virginia Beach dentist, died by suicide in jail when deputies found her unresponsive at 6:03 p.m. on Sunday and declared her dead at 6:42 p.m.—officials are investigating the case.  13News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Virginia Beach is seeking information from businesses or nonprofits to lease the Oceanfront MOCA building at 2200 Parks Ave to maintain its cultural arts use—officials said proposals will be reviewed soon.  Daily Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • An 11-year-old boy at St. John the Apostle was suspended after he reported that a classmate showed him a bullet on school grounds, and his mother sued the school. A Virginia Beach judge ruled in her favor—saying the school made a big mistake—and the boy will finish fifth grade as his mother plans to switch schools next year.  13News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia Beach City Council is holding public hearings to get resident input on the proposed $2.8 billion city budget for fiscal 2025-2026 — the budget allocates $1.2 billion for public schools. Public hearings will be held on April 16 at the Convention Center and on April 22 at the Council Chamber at City Hall; residents wishing to comment must register by calling 757-385-4304 before 5 p.m.  WAVY
