  • The community garden at Thrive Peninsula provided produce for The Market—a free grocery store that helps people facing food insecurity. Volunteers helped keep the garden thriving to support local food needs.  The Virginian-Pilot

CRIME NEWS

  • On Jan. 24, VBPD officers in the third precinct stopped a car near Lake Edward and when the driver fled and jumped into freezing water they rescued him using a personal floatation device—he was treated for exposure at the hospital before being arrested for two outstanding warrants.  WAVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Beach City Public Schools has begun using the Zum bus tracking app to give parents real-time alerts and improve bus routes. The app—available for iPhone and Android—will track school buses and adjust routes during delays, and a full rollout is planned for the next school year.  WTKR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia Beach City Public Schools voted Tuesday night to suspend diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in its curriculums following a federal order that cuts education funds for non-compliance—schools must now certify compliance by April 11 as Superintendent Don Robertson expressed concerns about the risk of an investigation.  WAVY
  • The Virginia DMV teamed up with the TSA at Washington Dulles International Airport on Monday to remind residents to get a REAL ID before the May 7 deadline—DMV Commissioner Gerald Lackey urged people to use the online application to check required documents and schedule an appointment for faster service.  WAVY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Chesapeake Square mall began partial demolition Monday for a major $30 million redevelopment — which will add a grocery store and retail spaces while keeping all 30 indoor retailers and restaurants open with parking available. RC Demolition crews started on the former Burlington space and will tear down additional sections over the next 8 to 12 months as Kotarides Holdings transforms the 717,000-square-foot property.  Daily Press
