  • On April 12th, the Virginia Press Association honored The Independent News with six awards—recognizing reporting, photography and commentary by contributors including Dr. Karen Beardslee Kwasny, Jim Roberts, Bill Tiernan and John Doucette for its final year of publication. The newspaper, which printed its last edition in December after nearly a decade in Virginia Beach, was celebrated at the conference in Richmond.  The Princess Anne Independent News

CRIME NEWS

  • On Saturday afternoon, a police chase that began in North Carolina ended in a crash on Interstate 64 when Chesapeake officers deployed spike strips and Virginia State Police took the suspect into custody near the Indian River Road exit—one trooper was treated for non-life-threatening injuries after the vehicle struck three state police vehicles.  13News Now
  • Chesapeake police said a car chase that began in Elizabeth City ended April 12th when a suspect vehicle hit three state police cars on I-64 near the Indian River Road exit and 53-year-old Heather Barrington was arrested and charged with disregarding police command, assault on law enforcement and reckless endangerment with a child present — one trooper was injured.  WTKR

  • The Virginia Beach School Board suspended DEI programs and many parents, educators and board members are asking questions. Certain initiatives like the equity dashboard will end and board members are looking for answers on how this change will affect staff and students.  The Virginian-Pilot

  • A therapy dog aged 14 months named Skippy Junior works at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital to bring comfort to patients and staff — he honors the legacy of a pet who served nearly eight years until his sudden death last February. Nursing student Raquel Perez said his calm presence helped ease her anxiety during a stressful day.  WTKR
