  • Virginia Beach's Parks and Recreation Department opened the renovated Mount Trashmore Park playground today — the $1.6 million project added slides, climbers and nets with safety surfacing, expanded Kid's Cove by 3,200 square feet and improved the stairs and the smaller playground off Edwin Drive.  WTKR

CRIME NEWS

  • On Monday, Virginia Beach police arrested 18-year-old Josiah Spann for a cell phone robbery on Sassafras Court in which a man was followed after he was asked for a lighter and then fired his own gun in self-defense — authorities said his case is linked to an earlier shooting that injured a 17-year-old while a third shooting on Haygood Road remains unrelated.  13News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kelly Education is launching an online training program for substitute teachers in Virginia to help address over 3,100 teacher vacancies—offering courses lasting five hours, 10 hours, or 20 hours that focus on classroom management, executing lesson plans, and understanding student learning. The program is already available in Missouri and Wisconsin and aims to better prepare substitutes for long-term classroom coverage.  WAVY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Invasive spotted lanternflies are expected to move into Hampton Roads as warmer temperatures accelerate their growth and threaten local trees, vines, and food crops. Researchers from Old Dominion University advise residents to look for adult insects and egg masses and report any sightings to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  WAVY

  • Paulmichael Youngmills, a Navy veteran and fiduciary financial advisor, said active duty and veteran members should hold their investments — warning that selling locks in losses — after the first quarter saw a 4.6% drop in U.S. stocks. He advised older veterans to choose cash withdrawals over loans and said more guidance will be offered at the American Legion Post 327 fish fry at 5 p.m. Friday, May 2 in Norfolk.  WAVY
