  • Children in Virginia Beach enjoy a new slide at Mount Trashmore that is part of a $1.6 million renovation to the Kids Cove area, which now includes musical instruments and climbing spots—features that let families revisit a classic park experience.   • Two months after a driver shot officers during a traffic stop on Feb. 21 on South Rosemont Road—killing officer Cameron Girvin and fellow officer Christopher Reese—three Virginia Beach officers recalled Girvin's brave, caring nature and shared their deep grief over his loss.  13News Now

  • Strawberry Fest at the Beach is planned for May 17 in the Artery District on Laskin Road and will offer free live music and children's chalk painting in the street—organizers say it gives local families a fresh option since the Pungo Strawberry Festival was canceled—bringing community members together for a fun day.  WTKR
  • The free summer concert series is returning to the Oceanfront starting May 21 with Lovelytheband and Winyah at 24th Street Park, and national recording artists including DJ Jazzy Jeff, The Wonder Years and Queensryche will perform on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. through Sept. 13—concert lineups may change.  WAVY

  • The Virginia Beach Fire Department is hosting a recruiting open house Saturday morning at Harry E. Diezel Fire Training Center on 927 S. Birdneck Road from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Guests will meet instructors, tour the facilities and learn about job opportunities—attendees should note the event is free but may be cancelled if the weather is bad.  13News Now

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Ground was broken Tuesday at Pembroke Square for new amenities including Fogo de Chão, Funny Bone Comedy Club, Tempo by Hilton and a seven-story apartment complex — part of a $200 million redevelopment of the former Pembroke Mall. The project started in November 2021 — officials said further details on upcoming steps are expected soon.  WTKR
