On Tuesday morning, a house fire at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront injured an adult with ALS and killed several pets—fire crews rescued one person and displaced two others while the cause remains under investigation.

The JACKALOPE Festival returns to Virginia Beach and will run from May 30 to June 1 at the Oceanfront where skateboarders, roller skaters, and BMX riders will compete and perform in live sports shows and pop up markets.

Organizers will accept video entries from skaters to win a fully paid trip to compete in events in Mississauga and Montréal—marking the festival's third year and growing global contest series.

Virginia Beach tourism officials say the city is working to counter a drop in Canadian visits linked to U.S. political tensions by boosting domestic marketing and continuing events like the JACKALOPE festival that will return later this month — a measure that includes the Loonie Savers program to lower travel costs. Local business owners worry as Canadian travelers once brought over $38 million into the local economy in 2023.

At Great Neck Middle School in Virginia Beach, Ms. Iwalani Wilson celebrated 20 years as the 6th grade social studies teacher and earned a STEAM grant — a $5,000 award — to add coding lessons with Ozobots to her history class.

She also leads a You Belong club that supports minority students and urges families to value education.
