- ➤ Vanguard Landing is a new housing community in Virginia Beach for people with developmental, intellectual and neurodiverse needs; it is being built near Princess Anne Road in Pungo and will offer 123 full-time residential spots in phase one set for completion by May 2026 — fundraising is ongoing with more than $111,000 raised from donors. - ➤ Hope for Life Rescue in the Hilltop area took back 15 animals from past adoptions in the last two months and is now over capacity. The organization will open an expansion soon (founder Pauline Cushman urged careful planning before adopting) as all foster homes remain full. WTKR

- ➤ Virginia Beach police responded to a shooting report on the 200 block of Standard Lane at 10:20 p.m. on Wednesday night—taking a victim with non-life-threatening injuries to a hospital while apprehending a suspect. WAVY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Beach will raise its meal tax by 0.5% in July, which brings it to 6% and, along with a 6% sales tax, creates a 12% rate for restaurant operators and patrons—an increase that restaurant owner JB Maas criticized as too burdensome. Council member Barbara Henley had urged a delay until after the busy summer season, but the change is set to go into effect as planned. 13News Now
- ➤ Dozens of people gathered on 35th Street at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Thursday to honor fallen VBPD Officers Christopher Reese and Cameron Girvin.
