Good morning, Virginia Beach.
A Virginia Beach man, identified as 52-year-old Robert Edwards Jr., was arrested on Monday in connection to a shooting that occurred on Wednesday at 10:18 p.m. in the 200 Block of Standard Lane—police say the injured person is in stable condition and he faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
On Monday night, the NAACP held a town hall in Virginia Beach where community members questioned school board members about keeping DEI policies suspended after an April vote amid concerns about federal funding—officials noted that no peer-reviewed research was used in the decision and that the equity dashboard remains available through the school year.
Virginia Beach City Council approved a budget that includes the EMS compassionate billing program, which begins July 1 to help cover rising EMS costs + lower out-of-pocket fees for residents regardless of insurance status.
EMS chiefs said the program will bill insurance benefits equally for local residents, military personnel and their families.
Beginning Wednesday, two new stop signs will be installed at the intersection of Norfolk and Mediterranean to require all vehicles to stop.
City officials say the change comes after 14 crashes since 2023 and is part of extra safety measures including illuminated signs, raised medians, and curb extensions (expected to finish in 90 days) (designed to ease growing traffic concerns).
