  • The YMCA of Hampton Roads invites community members to join the 41st annual Independence Day 5K at Mt. Trashmore on July 4 to raise crucial funds for local programs such as childcare, water safety, and teen mentoring. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Twenty-three dogs were removed from a home after a fire last Wednesday, and four people as well as 50 dogs were displaced on North Landing Road on June 18 — animal services and local shelters including the Norfolk SPCA, Portsmouth Humane Society, Heritage Humane Society and Pennies For Paws are caring for the animals, many of which are puppies born in the last five months.  WTKR
  • A house fire in Salem Villages in Virginia Beach Friday night displaced three residents and resulted in the deaths of two dogs—firefighters arrived quickly and reported no injuries.  13News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The City will raise the restaurant meals tax from 5.5% to 6.0% next Tuesday to support a major projects fund as restaurant revenue slowed because of inflation. The Virginia Beach Restaurant Association started a petition urging Mayor Bobby Dyer to lower the tax to 3.5% with a goal of eliminating it over time—affecting both diner bills and restaurant owners.  WAVY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Across Hampton Roads, cooling centers are opening at local libraries and community centers to help residents beat extreme heat when temperatures soar into the mid-90s and heat indexes hit between 105 and 110 degrees — officials advise checking local facility hours for details.  WTKR
  • An Excessive Heat Warning was in effect on Monday, June 23 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Hampton Roads, with temperatures reaching the mid to upper 90s and heat indices of 105 to 111 degrees. Local libraries and community centers — including those in Virginia Beach — provided air-conditioned relief for residents seeking to beat the heat.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dominion Energy is helping low-income families stay cool amid a heat wave—its spokesperson said the company will work with community agencies and offer bill payment help and weatherization assistance. The utility promised that it will not disconnect customers even if they fall behind on their bills while temperatures rise.  WAVY
  • Virginia Beach city officials are taking extra steps to keep workers safe during the heat wave by following OSHA rules—giving breaks, water and shade and watching for heat illness in jobs like Parks, Public Works and Public Utilities.  13News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The new COVID variant NB.1.8.1, called Nimbus, is spreading fast in Hampton Roads and may lead to a summer surge with more crowd events increasing exposure. Sentara’s director of infection prevention said hospital cases are down now but warned that people with symptoms like painful 'razor blade throat' (which can make it hard to drink fluids) may soon need a booster shot.  WAVY

  • Virginia Beach launched a new kayak rental kiosk at Stumpy Lake Natural Area that lets visitors use the Rent.Fun app to borrow kayaks. The service costs $25 (for up to two hours) and $15 (for each additional hour).  WTKR
