GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center received $3.2 million for repairs and operations after City Council approved the plan Tuesday night in an 11-0 vote. The aquarium will use its foundation money to pay 60 percent of the cost while studies show it needs over 8-million dollars in updates for aging exhibits and building issues.  WTKR
  • Eight members of Virginia Beach's Swiftwater Rescue Team deployed Sunday evening to Texas to help rescue those affected by deadly floods and brought specialized boats and gear — equipment they use in their regular training to support search and rescue missions at the request of Texas emergency management — as part of a state-wide emergency effort. The team remains one of about 30 Virginia-based units prepared to respond during disasters.  13News Now

  • Milk and Honey, a new Southern-style restaurant in Atlantic Park, opened over the Fourth of July weekend. The restaurant (located off Baltic Avenue and 19th Street) offers brunch items (like chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, and gumbo) while chef Sylrome Bishop said he is excited to set a new standard in local dining.  WTKR
