  • Former inmate Wendy Morelli, convicted of fraud and credit card forgery, now works in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center kitchen under the sheriff’s New Beginning Program that offers job opportunities to rehabilitated individuals. She said the new role gives her a chance to rebuild her life with benefits+steady pay after facing years of hardship.  WAVY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Six people were injured in a crash on the 600 block of Independence Boulevard on Thursday evening — police said the victims were taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening treatment and the crash remains under investigation.  WAVY

  • Virginia Beach's Military Aviation Museum has launched the quirky exhibit "When Nature Calls: At 26,000 Feet" in its newly renovated restrooms to show how World War II pilots handled bathroom breaks during long flights — the display uses photos and veteran stories and is available with general admission.  13News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A recent survey found that parents plan to spend less on school supplies this fall—averaging about $389 instead of $506 last year. Norfolk Health Department will host a back-to-school community day on July 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Virginia Beach Public Schools will hold a care fair on August 16 from 12:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. offering free backpacks to the first 4,000 students along with other essential services.  WTKR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A weak cold front is moving into the region with heavy rain and flash flood risks today and through Saturday. Rain will fall in heavy bursts with rates of up to 2 inches per hour in low areas—residents should monitor weather forecasts—and avoid flooded roads.  13News Now
  • A shoaling alert has been posted for Rudee Inlet after a Virginia Beach survey Tuesday—showing shallow water along 100 feet east and 150 feet west of the jetties with depths as low as 4.8 and 6.8 feet mean lower low water. Mariners are advised to travel at idle speed—seeking local help if they are unfamiliar with the inlet conditions.  WAVY

  • Dominion Energy and Virginia Beach emergency crews walked through key sites Thursday to check areas for staging power trucks and supplies in case a storm hits — they plan to use parks and open spaces so crews can quickly fix power and assess damage.  WTKR
