  • A Virginia Beach nonprofit from Real Life Church is gathering trailers and supplies to help Hurricane Helene victims in North Carolina—next month, Coastal Recovery Virginia will donate its second pop-up home to aid families displaced by the storm nearly one year ago.  WTKR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sandbox VR will open its first Virginia Beach location on August 1 in the Atlantic Park entertainment district—where guests will enjoy full-body virtual reality gameplay in private rooms and receive personalized highlight videos after each session. The venue will offer nine immersive experiences including collaborations with Netflix and director Zack Snyder to bring cutting-edge entertainment to the area.  WAVY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • More sand will come to Croatan Beach next week as officials begin a renourishment project delayed by equipment issues and off-season quality concerns. The work will finish in two phases by August 15 to protect dunes from storms (some residents are relieved while others worry about disruptions to planned events).  WTKR
  • First responders warned swimmers and surfers on July 23 that dangerous rip currents spread from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront to Morehead City—beachgoers were urged to stay out of the water and follow red flag warnings from lifeguards.  13News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia Beach Fire Department's Swiftwater Rescue Team returned home today after an 18-day deployment to assist flood victims in Texas. They were greeted at the Harry E. Diezel Fire Training Center around 4 p.m. as Fire Chief Ken Pravetz praised their hard work.  WTKR
  • Virginia Beach’s Swiftwater Rescue Team returned home on Wednesday after 18 days of search work in Texas following deadly floods over the July 4 weekend, with Captain Max McQuarrie saying he saw the worst damage in his career. The team shared their stories of rescuing people and recovering cherished items — a baby quilt reunited with its owner — and now shows a Kerr County Strong sticker on their vehicles.  13News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • An AccuWeather report named Hampton Roads as one of the worst spots for mosquitoes as West Nile virus–positive insects spread due to hot temperatures and rain. Diamond Exterminators said they are spraying up to 50 local homes daily while local health officials recorded two West Nile cases (reminding residents to remove standing water that breeds mosquitoes).  WAVY
