COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Third Baptist Church in Portsmouth, once a stop on the Underground Railroad, now helps residents get food every fourth Monday when cars line up at 8 a.m.+distribution starts at 9 a.m. The program seeks to ease hunger as food prices rose 3% in June and a $300,000 funding cut may delay a new Food Bank headquarters in Virginia Beach.  WAVY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The parents of 21-year-old Nicholas Rizzotti mourn his death after he crashed his motorcycle Saturday on Virginia Beach Boulevard—he sped through a red light and hit a car that suffered minor injuries.  WAVY
  • On Monday afternoon in Virginia Beach, a truck pulling a trailer crashed into Seaside Dogs and Grill on Upton Drive, injuring two people and prompting firefighters to free the driver from the truck.  WTKR
  • Two people were taken to a hospital after a dump truck carrying a bobcat hit a building in the 2100 block of Upton Dr—both sustained non life-threatening injuries when the incident occurred at about 2:04 p.m. on July 28.  WAVY

CRIME NEWS

  • Phillip Graham, 27, who was interviewed from Norfolk’s City Jail, denied the sexual assault allegations and said some details are fabricated while Virginia Beach officials charged him with forcible sodomy, abduction, robbery with a firearm and additional firearm offenses.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia Beach is nearly finished with its Windsor Winds Tide Gates project to prevent floods like the one caused by Hurricane Matthew, as officials explained that the system will close gates during high tides and pump down upstream lake water. The project, which began in 2022, includes 10 dedicated rain sensors + real-time data tracking to help protect low-lying areas such as Windsor Woods during storms.  WAVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Suzanna Myers, co-owner of a behavioral health practice in Lynnhaven, said she faced repeated denials and payment confusion with TRICARE after Humana Military switched its claims processor to PGBA early this year, forcing her practice to use personal funds and lose two providers. Rep. Jen Kiggans announced legislation to expand TRICARE by covering military dependents until age 26 & closing the coverage gap with civilian plans.  WAVY
