Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 8th of August.
Good morning, Virginia Beach.
Work is underway on a memorial at the corner of Nimmo Parkway and Princess Anne Road — with the foundation and pump house installed — to honor lives lost during the 5/31 Municipal Center shooting over six years ago.
Steel will arrive next month and crews will add walkways and stones to complete the respectful tribute.
Wildfire smoke from over 700 active Canadian fires drifted into Hampton Roads last night — air quality was rated unhealthy for sensitive groups and experts said the smoke will linger for several days despite improvements expected later today and tomorrow.
Over 30 local Commissioners of Revenue are accepting food and money donations through August as part of the statewide Commissioners & Cans drive to fight food insecurity.
The drive— which has provided over 65,000 meals since 2018— helps keep donations in the communities where they are given.
Local experts said youth crime and violence are causing lasting emotional trauma among young people in the region, and community programs are working to offer mental health support.
They stressed that structured mentoring and therapy—provided by groups like VIP LLC and Thriveworks—are essential to help youth build emotional skills and safety.
