CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Morgan Babecki, a 29-year-old Virginia Beach resident, died at the scene of a crash on the 2200 block of Independence Boulevard near Princess Anne Road just before 1 a.m. Wednesday—police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators with no charges anticipated. 13News Now
- ➤ Virginia Beach police said a wrong-way driver hit another car on London Bridge Road overnight Wednesday at about 2:20 a.m.—the crash killed 37-year-old Steven White II and led to charges of manslaughter, DUI and possession of fictitious identification for 26-year-old Erwin Marroquin-Herrera while he and a passenger were hospitalized. - ➤ The Virginia Beach School Board met on Wednesday to explore ways to help employees handle rising health insurance costs, considering options such as using division funds that would cost between $2.3 million and $4.3 million while facing a lawsuit from over 100 employees who learned of the hikes after signing contracts. The board noted that premiums will revert to 2019-2022 levels in 2026 — and new relief measures will continue to be reviewed amid budget concerns. 13News Now

- ➤ Virginia Beach leaders are hosting information sessions at libraries and recreation centers as voters prepare for a November referendum on how city council members are elected, with a choice between a 10-1 system and a modified 7-3-1 system. - ➤ On Wednesday, CHKD held a handprint ceremony where cancer specialists, families and Hyundai representatives honored a $100,000 donation from Hyundai Hope on Wheels to support pediatric cancer research. Amanda Helvig, whose daughter spent 27 days in the hospital after a leukemia diagnosis, said the event gave hope—her daughter now is in the maintenance phase. 13News Now
