  • During last weekend's Labor of Love blood drive, local donors helped WTKR News 3 and the Virginia American Red Cross exceed their goal by donating 338 units when the target was 253—earning them a Peanuts-themed t-shirt.  WTKR

CRIME NEWS

  • Virginia Beach marks the anniversary of the 1989 Greekfest riots that saw scores of arrests, looting, two people shot by private guards, and about 20 officers injured—results that led to a $6 million tourism loss and prompted city reforms including a human rights commission and the end of the annual event.  13News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Virginia Beach city leaders passed an ordinance Tuesday night to support a dedication ceremony at Salem High School for world-renowned music artist Timbaland—who graduated from Salem High—and the city expects over 5,000 community members to attend the event planned for next month from Oct. 17 to 19.  WTKR

  • The NAACP Virginia Beach Branch hosted a town hall (at New Hope Baptist Church, 395 Old Great Neck Road) last night at 6 p.m. to support the 10-1 voting system referendum as community leaders explained its benefits ahead of November’s vote.  13News Now

  • Virginia Beach reopened a section of the Oceanfront on Thursday (between 8th Street and 22nd Street) after tests confirmed that bacteria levels meet state water quality standards and the area is safe for swimming.  13News Now
