EDUCATION NEWS

  • A group of Virginia Wesleyan University alumni is boycotting the planned name change to Batten University by organizing an alternative celebration—No Home Homecoming—during homecoming week. They will hold a rally at the campus entrance on Saturday at noon while the new name is set to take effect next July.  WTKR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Virginia Beach Fire Department warned residents today about the fire risks of lithium-ion batteries ahead of National Fire Prevention Week and stressed that unattended charging can lead to dangerous fires. Fire Captain Kevin Lehlbach, who led a demonstration yesterday, said using certified products and watching batteries closely—especially when stored in sheds—can help prevent fire damage.  13News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kristi Benson has secured new care for her 87-year-old mother with dementia as Princess Anne Health + Rehabilitation Center, which will close on Oct. 5 after losing its certification, prepares to shut down. She said her search uncovered poor conditions at many facilities and hopes increased nursing home funding will help improve care.  WTKR
